It is with great sadness that the Directors of the Early Music Society of the Islands write to tell you of the untimely and unexpected death of Michael Jarvis (1958-2020). He was widely regarded as one of Canada’s leading performers on early keyboards.

Michael was a pillar of the West Coast early music community and has appeared many times in EMSI’s programmes, most recently in last year’s Christmas concert with El Mundo and in a January performance with Chloe Kim and Martin Bonham. EMSI looked forward to many more years of projects with this versatile and creative musician.

Michael was also well-known for his frequent collaborations with Paul Luchkow, Victoria Baroque and Early Music Vancouver. He was Music Director at St. Barnabas Church.

Michael will be remembered for his sunny disposition, good humour, warm heart and exuberant musicianship. His legacy of many recordings on the Hungaroton, Marquis Classics, ATMA, Naxos, Solitudes and Avalon labels will continue to bring joy to listeners for many years to come.

Michael is survived by his wife Carolyn Sinclair who requests that no flowers be sent. To Carolyn and Michael’s many friends and musical colleagues we extend our sincere sympathy and condolences.
