Portrait, oil on canvas of Gottfried Reiche (1667–1734) by Elias Gottlob Haussmann (1695–1774), 1727
Bach specified an instrument he called the “tromba o corno da tirarsi” for the elaborate brass line in three of his cantatas: the only known mention of this horn. No instrument, picture, or any other documentation is know to have survived. However, research by Olivier Picorn has uncovered some clues, which led to the reinvention of the corno da tirarsi, as documented in his thesis for the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
Horn player Anneke Scott describes the corno da tirarsi in her #CornoNotCorona series.
