SUMMARY:Concerto di Margherita (ITALY)
DESCRIPTION:Il Gioco della cieca (Blind Man’s Bluff) \nBuy tickets \n“Blind love I do not trust to thee\, that makes desires full of obscurity”. Thus comments the chorus in Guarini’s play\, “The Faithful Shepherd” (Il pastor fido) on two lovers’ passionate but beleaguered love tale. In the third act of the play\, set in the idyllic pastoral world of Arcadia\, two lovers play a game of “Blind Man’s Bluff” (or Gioco della Cieca\, as it is known in Italian). One\, Amaryllis\, is blindfolded and accidentally ends up in the arms of the other\, Mirtillo\, who desires her\, unbeknownst to her and the community. While the two characters wander sightless—Amaryllis because of the blindfold\, Mirtillo because of his tormented love—Guarini’s chorus bemoans the treacherous and false nature of blind love. \nTaking as an inspiration the vocal and instrumental works of late 16th and early 17th century Italian composers such as deWert\, Caccini\, Kapsberger and d’India\, the ensemble Concerto di Margherita presents a fable of an archetypal Lover\, caught\, like Amaryllis in Guarini’s play\, in a cruel game of Blind Man’s Bluff. Playing with sight and visibility throughout the concert\, the musicians\, who all sing and accompany themselves on their instrument\, take the audience with them on the Lover’s path: born in Arcadian innocence\, blinded and deluded by love\, lost and disoriented in darkness and finding solace in obscurity. \nMusic by deWert\, Caccini\, Kapsberger\, d’India\, Andrea Gabrieli\, Monteverdi and more. \nPROGRAMME \nImprovisation on “La Gazzella” \nGiovanni Girolamo Kapsberger (1580 – 1651) \nVeri diletti\, Libro secondo d’arie \nFrancesca Caccini (1587 – 1641) \nAure Volanti (Coro di Damigelle)\, La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola di Alcina \nSigismondo d’India (1582 – 1692) \nOcchi belli\, occhi sereni\, Primo libro di Villanelle a 3\, 4 e 5 voci \nClaudio Monteverdi (1567 – 1643) \nLumi miei\, cari lumi\, Il terzo libro dei madrigali\, \nGiaches de Wert (1535 – 1596) \nO primavera gioventù dell’anno\, O dolcezze amarissi-me\, Ma se le mie speranze\, L’undecimo libro di madrigali a cinque voci \nGiulio Caccini  \nAmarilli\, mia bella\, Le nuove musiche \nGiovanni Girolamo Kapsberger \nChe fai tu\, Villanelle\, Libro secondo \nSigismondo d’India \nOcchi de’ miei desiri\, Secondo libro di villanelle a 3\, 4 e 5 voci \nSu\, su prendi la cetra o pastore\, Le musiche per due voci \nGirolamo Frescobaldi (1583 – 1643) \nDonna siam’ rei di morte\, Primo libro d’arie musicali \nSigismondo d’India \nAmorosi miei sol\, Primo libro di Villanelle a 3\, 4 e 5 voci \nGiovanni Girolamo Kapsberger  \nSinfonia à 4\, Libro Primo di Sinfonie a 4 voci \nSigismondo d’India \nCara mia cetra\, Le Musiche da cantar \nGiaches de Wert \nE s’altri non m’inganna\, O lungamente sospirato\, L’undecimo libro di madrigali a cinque voci \nGiovanni Girolamo Kapsberger  \nPassacaglia\, Libro quarto d’intavolatura di chitarrone \nGiulio Caccini \nQueste lagrime amare\, Le nuove musiche \nGiaches de Wert  \nChi mi fura il ben mio\, Primo libro di madrigali a quattro voci \nGiovanni Giacomo Gastoldi (1554 – 1609) \nCieco Amor Quarto libro de’ Madrigali \nHere is a preview video for the concert:

SUMMARY:Jupiter Ensemble (FRANCE)
DESCRIPTION:Amazone \nBuy tickets \nLutenist Thomas Dunford returns to EMSI’s stage\, leading Jupiter Ensemble\, acclaimed as one of the finest in a new generation of early music ensembles. Soprano Lea Desandres\, “one of today’s most exciting voices in early-music performance” – New York Times\, is featured in a program on the theme of the Amazons\, a myth that is very present in Baroque music. “Amazone” is a hymn to nature\, a story of the heart and the poetic\, universal and timeless message of a sentimental and emotional journey. \nThomas Dunford describes the inception of Jupiter: \n“With Jupiter\, I wanted to bring together a collective of exceptional musicians from the new generation\, whom I have met through collaborations with numerous ensembles. Each artist invited to join this project is brilliant in the mastery of his or her instrument\, and some are already renowned as soloists. The great freedom that each of them has been able to acquire over the course of their projects\, and the choice of research and a shared understanding of the music\, will enable them to render the different repertoires tackled with passion\, strength and emotion. \nEarly music has undergone a great period of rediscovery\, thanks to pioneers such as William Christie\, Philippe Herreweghe and Jordi Savall\, with whom I have had the good fortune to work. It is now our responsibility\, as a generation that has grown up with this music\, to continue to bring it to life while at the same time making it more modern\, showing just how accessible it can be and how much it can touch people’s hearts. \nListening\, improvisation\, energy and a shared global vision will be the key. All our past experiences\, as well as our collective work within Jupiter\, will enable us to acquire this great freedom that will make the music extremely lively and\, I hope\, touching.” \nAmazone will include music by Vivaldi\, Marais\, Couperin\, Cavalli\, Philidor\, Destouches and more. \n“Thomas Dunford gathered together a team of some of the finest musicians of his generation… Brace yourselves for some exquisitely dizzy spells\, at the hand of Jupiter.”\n– Erik Orsenna\, author \nWatch a spine-tingling performance of Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans:

SUMMARY:laReverdie (ITALY)
DESCRIPTION:Stella Nova – The New Star \nBuy tickets \nStella Nova offers a view into the unusually rich repertoire for Advent and Christmas that developed in Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Extending far beyond the strictly liturgical tradition\, this music reflects festively embellished medieval Christmastime celebrations. \nThe concert opens with an English devotional sequence and motet reflecting on the picturesque miracles of St. Nicholas\, a holy bishop from 4th-century Asia Minor whose feast day surrounds the winter solstice. Worshiped throughout the Middle Ages from Iceland to Italy\, St. Nick\, not yet suspected of domestic trespassing by sliding down the chimney once a year\, originally shared attributes with other Norse deities such as Wotan or For. \nThen\, in a panoply of French motets and English cantilenas\, the program recounts the birth of Christ. Demonstrating the widespread Marian devotion in the 13th and 14th centuries\, these works reflect a dual celebration of Christ’s birth alongside the Mother of God as the medium of salvation. For instance\, in polyphonic motets\, various texts focusing on this duality are layered on top of each other to amplify the solemnity of the occasion. \nThe program concludes with a selection of French motets and Italian laude\, which tell the story of the comet (Stella nova)\, venerated in the Jewish Book of Numbers\, and whose bright light led the Three Wise Men to honor the holy child with precious gifts. \n  \n\nOver the past 40  years\, in order to bring alive the rich and varied medieval repertory\, the members of laReverdie considered it to be crucial to both sing and play several instruments. For this purpose\, they have developed a common language and sound that rend them unmistakable both in the mixture of their voices as well as of their instruments. \nAlong the over 40 years of research\, laReverdie has ranged from liturgical chant to the first examples of polyphony\, from the Italian and French Ars nova to the complex Franco-Flemish polyphony of Quattrocento\, utilizing also the practice of improvisation\, and dialog with instruments of other cultures. \nThe group is regularly invited to perform in Festivals and Concert Seasons in Italy\, Switzerland\, Austria\, Germany\, France\, England\, Spain\, Portugal\, Belgium\, Netherlands\, Poland\, Slovenia\, Sweden\, Hungary and Mexico. \nConcerts of laReverdie has been recorded and broadcasted on Radio3 (Italy)\, Süddeutscher Rundfunk\, Bayerischer Rundfunk\, Südwest Rundfunk e Westdeutscher Rundfunk (Germany)\, BRT3\, Radio Klara (Belgium)\, France Musique (France)\, ORF 1 (Austria)\, Antenna 2 (Portugal)\, Rne e RTVE (Spain)\, Radio2 (Poland)\, Radio Televizija Slovenja (Slovenia)\, Espace2 (Switzerland)\, KRO Radio4 (Netherlands). \n\n

SUMMARY:Opera Prima (ITALY)
DESCRIPTION:Tormento Seicento \nBuy tickets \nThe magnificent soprano Amanda Forsythe returns with viola da gamba virtuoso Cristiano Contadin and his renowned ensemble Opera Prima in a program of music exploring the Galant style that was in vogue during the middle of the 18th century. The complexity and formal structure of the Baroque gives way to a charismatic beauty and captivating elegance that was still grounded by a virtuosic basso continuo. \nAmerican soprano Amanda Forsythe\, celebrated for her performances on both sides of the Atlantic\, is a regular soloist with the highly acclaimed baroque ensembles Les Talens Lyriques\, the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra\, the Boston Early Music Festival\, the Handel and Haydn Society\, Boston Baroque\, Tafelmusik\, Apollo’s Fire\, Opera Prima\, Pacific Musicworks\, Early Music Vancouver\, and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. She sang Euridice on the recording of Charpentier’s La descente d’Orphée aux enfers with the Boston Early Music Festival which won the GRAMMY AWARD for Best Opera Recording. Her début solo album of Handel arias “The Power of Love” with Apollo’s Fire was recently followed with the highly praised “Heavenly Bach”. She toured with the outstanding French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky\, performing works based on the Orfeo myth\, and subsequently recorded the role of Euridice in a new edition of Gluck’s Orfeo for the ERATO label. Her discography includes more than 25 albums and DVDs\, many of them premiere recordings. Forthcoming discs include Handel’s Roman Cantatas with Opera Prima\, and Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona and a solo Telemann album\, both with the Boston Early Music Festival. \nOpera Prima\, a newly established ensemble directed by Cristiano Contadin\, was created to bring historically informed concerts and recordings of the Renaissance and Baroque period to life. The heart of the project lies in exploring the repertoire of the viola da gamba in its various styles\, and approaching all music with pleasure and enthusiasm\, as if each work for this instrument was newly-composed. If\, through passionate communication\, we can touch the hearts of the public\, then the language of early music will be easy to understand. \n\nThe first recording by Opera Prima\, “The Complete Telemann Trio Sonatas and Concertos”\, for the Brilliant Classics label\, received critical acclaim at the national and international level\, and was proclaimed by Classic Voice Magazine as CD of the month in February 2015. Opera Prima has performed concerts at festivals in Italy\, Greece\, Suisse\, Slovenia\, Estonia and United States. Recent Opera Prima recordings include Dowland’s Lacrimae (awarded “Disc of the Month” by Musica magazine and praised by Fanfare as “a fabulous performance”)\,Torna Vincitor\, an all-Graun disc of cantatas and viol concerto with Amanda Forsythe (chosen by Opera News as the Critic’s Choice in March 2021)\, a 2023 recording of Tartini (Klassik Heute claims Opera Prima “deliver[s] a buoyant orchestral sound with sensitively executed solos and decisive ensemble direction by Contadin\, who also captivates as a soloist with temperament\, empathy and sensitivity”). \n\nPROGRAMME: \nClaudio Monteverdi (1567 – 1643) \nSinfonia per strumenti dall’ VIII libro di madrigali \nLuigi Rossi (1697 – 1653) \nMio ben Aria  for soprano and continuo \nTarquinio Merula (1595 – 1665) \nBallo detto Eccardo for soprano and continuo \nDomenico Mazzocchi (1592 -1665) \nSdegno campion audace aria for soprano and continuo \nCipriano de Rore/ Girolamo Dalla Casa ( ? – 1601) \nAnchor che col partire madrigale diminuito per la viola bastarda and continuo \nBarbara Strozzi (1551 – 1618) \nChe si può fare aria for soprano and continuo \nGasparo Sartorio (1630 – 1680) \nPerché quando apersi a l’aure vitali aria for soprano and continuo \nFrancesco Cavalli (1602 – 1676) \nDammi morte aria for soprano and continuo from “Artemisia” \nGiovanni Kapsberger (1580 – 1651) \nCanario for solo theorbo \nBenedetto Ferrari (1603 – 1681) \nCantata spirituale for soprano and continuo \nMonteverdi \nVoglio di vita uscire for soprano and continuo \nMerula  \nBallo detto Pollicio for 2 voices\, basso and continuo \nKapsberger  \nArpeggiata for solo harp \nGiulio Caccini (1551 – 1618) \nAmarilli\, mia bella Amarilli \nAnonimo (XVII sec.) \ninglese Amarilli\, mia bella Amarilli \nMaurizio Cazzati (1616 – 1678) \nCiaccona a 3 and il balletto della ciaccona for violin\, cornetto and continuo \nRossi  \nLa bella più bella aria for soprano and continuo \nAndrea Falconieri (1585 – 1656) \nPassacalle a 3 for 2 voices\, basso and continuo \nFerrari  \nAmanti io vi so dire aria for voice\, 2 violins and continuo \nWatch Amanda Forsythe and Opera Prima perform Strozzi’s Che si può fare: \n

SUMMARY:Les Délices (USA)
DESCRIPTION:Moonlit Mozart \nBuy tickets \nLes Délices\, from New York\, performs some of the most beautiful music ever written for wind instruments\, in this program of Mozart’s wind octets. The voluptuous sound of oboes\, clarinets\, bassoons and horns becomes even richer when played on period instruments with flawless ensemble playing. \nIn late-18th century Vienna\, wind bands known as “Harmoniemusik” offered an effective – and colorful – means of presenting music in virtually any setting. Whether performing nocturnes or serenades\, dance music\, or even operatic or symphonic reductions\, an ensemble of eight woodwinds could cover most – if not all – bases. Soaring melodies were often split between first oboe and first clarinet\, inner parts were covered by other woodwinds and horns\, bassoons would alternate between tenor solos and bustling bass lines\, and a double bass often provided reinforcement on the low end. For Moonlit Mozart\, acclaimed oboist and Les Délices Artistic Director\, Debra Nagy\, brings together today’s finest period-instrument wind players for an “undeniably uplifting” all-Mozart program that includes original 18th-century arrangements of selections from The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni\, plus Mozart’s monumental Serenade in C minor (K388). \nPROGRAMME: \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) \nSelections from The Magic Flute \n1. Overture arr. Joseph Heidenreich \n3. Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja [Andante] \n7. Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön [Larghetto] \n5. Du feines Täubchen nur herein [Allegro] \n\nSerenade in Eb\, KV375  \nI. Allegro Maestoso \n\nSelections from The Marriage of Figaro \nCinque…dieci arr. Debra Nagy \nNon più andrai farfallone amoroso \nDove sono i bei momenti \nEcco la marcia \n\nInterval \n\nSelections from Don Giovanni \n1. Ouvertura arr. Josef Triebensee \n2. Notte e giorno a faticar \n5. Là ci darem la mano \n19. Gia la mensa è preparata \n\nSerenade in C minor “Nachtmusik\,” KV388 \nI. Allegro \nII. Andante \nIII. Menuetto in canone \nIV. Allegro [Tema con variazione] \nWatch and listen to Les Délices with an arrangement by Mozart’s contemporary\, Josef Triebensee\, of la ci darem la mano from Don Giovanni

SUMMARY:Ensemble Caprice (CANADA)
DESCRIPTION:The King’s Music & Tavern Songs \nBuy tickets \nAn EMSI favourite Ensemble Caprice\, led by the indefatigable Matthias Maute\, returns with music from Purcell to Handel\, interwoven with traditional music from the British Isles. \nFrom Purcell to Handel\, this program enters the vibrant musical world of the British Isles\, where the elegance of the court\, the brilliance of the theatre\, and the vitality of popular tradition were never far apart. Refined arias of longing and lament stand beside sparkling recorder concertos\, ground-bass variations\, and dances whose roots reach into taverns\, streets\, and country gatherings. \nThe recorder becomes both virtuoso voice and storyteller\, moving freely between grace and mischief\, courtly poise and rustic swing. Purcell’s theatrical imagination\, Handel’s Italianate brilliance\, and the earthy energy of anonymous tunes from the 18th century meet in a single\, beguiling musical language. \nThroughout the program\, high and low constantly trade places: a noble lament can sound disarmingly intimate\, while a popular tune may suddenly reveal the refinement of chamber music. With Ensemble Caprice\, Matthias Maute\, and soprano Janelle Lucyk\, this concert celebrates music that is sophisticated\, playful\, deeply expressive\, and irresistibly alive. Let the dance begin — and raise your glass! \nTentative programme: \nJacob van Eyck (c. 1590–1657) – Engels Nachtegaeltje \nHenry Purcell (1659–1695) – Three in One upon a Ground \nGeorge Frideric Handel (1685–1759) – Lascia ch’io pianga — from the opera Rinaldo \nFra tempeste — from the opera Giulio Cesare \nGeorge Frideric Handel (1685–1759) – Concerto per flautino\, two violins and basso continuo \nAllegro – Adagio – Allegro \nAnonymous (18th century) – Johnny Cock thy Beaver \nBudro \nThe Duke of Norfolk \nFrancesco Geminiani / Arcangelo Corelli (1687–1762 / 1653–1713) – La Follia \nHenry Purcell (1659–1695) – O let me weep — from the opera The Fairy Queen \nRemember me — from the opera Dido and Aeneas \nArcangelo Corelli (1653–1713) – Concerto per flauto (Tempo di Gavotta) \nHenry Purcell (1659–1695) – Dance Suite \nA New Scotch Tune – If Music Be the Food of Love – Fairest Isle – Chaconne from The Fairy Queen
