SUMMARY:Cordiform
DESCRIPTION:Ten Songs from the Chansonnier de Jean de Montchenu\nJulie Ryning voice and Katelyn Clark clavisimbalum \nChansonnier de Jean de Montchenu\, c.1475 (Henri de Rothschild MS 2973\, Bibliothèque Nationale\, Paris) \nThis program features ten stunning works taken from the fifteenth-century Chansonnier de Jean de Montchenu. The heart-shaped songbook was copied around 1475 and created for a priest named Jean de Montchenu\, who was living in Geneva at this time. The beautifully adorned and carefully created manuscript sits in a cordiform (heart shape) filled with musical scores and lavish images. The book contains 43 songs and is not strictly a “chansonnier” as only 30 of the songs are in French. The remaining works are in Italian save for one Castilian example. Almost all of the songs from Montchenu’s collection have love as a predominant theme\, not surprising in light of the book’s heart shape. Although most works are anonymous\, popular composers such Dunstable and Dufay are also present within the collection. Our interpretation of the cordiform’s music includes both vocal interpretation with semi-improvised instrumental accompaniment and keyboard intabulations. Intabulating vocal music for instruments—such as lute or clavisimbalum—was common practice during the 1400s and suggests a different way in which this repertoire could have been performed and heard in and around court. \n  \nThis online performance will be freely available from April 3rd here.\n \nLearn more about the concert with the musicians’ interview and the lyrics and translations. \nAttend the premiere with the EMSI audience and applaud Duo Corvi at our Zoom Cordiform party! \n  \nDonations are greatly appreciated!

SUMMARY:Airs de Cour & Courtly Airs
DESCRIPTION:EMSI presents a program of courtly songs and instrumental works from England\, France\, Italy and Scotland\, performed by Victoria artists\, soprano Gwen Jamieson\, lutenist Doug Hensley and gambist Martin Bonham: sublime melodies from the high Renaissance and early Baroque. \nThe courtly songs of the late 16th and early 17th Centuries could be considered the apotheosis of a musical form that stretches back to the 11th and 12th Centuries with the music of the Trouvères and Troubadors. \nReveling in the bitter sweetness of unrequited love\, the songs range from intimate and gentle to energetic and passionate\, renewing the noble heritage of courtly love. \nThe rich timbre of Ms. Jamieson’s voice is laid over a plush fabric of lute\, viola da gamba\, vihuela and theorbo. These quintessential courtly instruments are also featured in solo and duo instrumental works of the time. \nThe program features music by Campion\, Dowland\, Guedron\, Moulinié and Sances\, along with anonymous songs from the Scottish collection of Thomas Wode’s part books. \n  \n \n  \nWatch an interview with the musicians and download the program notes here. \nThis online performance will be freely available from February 28th here. \nAnd don’t forget to register for our opening night post-concert-party here! \n  \n Programme \nWhat if a day or a month or a year Thomas Campion \nRicht soir opprest Anon Scotland \nLancashire Pipes Anon Northern England \nJoy to the person of my love Anon Scotland \nI saw my lady weep John Dowland \nDowland’s Adew for Master Oliver Cromwell John Dowland \nFine knacks for ladies John Dowland \nEnfin la beauté que j’adore Étienne Moulinié \nCessez mortels de soupirer Pierre Guedron \nNon ha sotto il ciel Étienne Moulinié \nToccata IV and Corrente  prima  Alessandro Piccinini \nConsert de differents Oyseaux Étienne Moulinié \nUsurpator tiranno Giovanni Felice Sances \n  \n  \nDonations in support of EMSI’s virtual concerts are greatly appreciated!

SUMMARY:Summer Garden Concert 2: A Great Noyse
DESCRIPTION:Both performances now fully booked!\nEMSI is pleased to present\, in cooperation with the Ancient Music Society of Victoria\, a second garden concert. The theme is outdoor music of the Renaissance\, and features A Great Noyse\, performing on sackbuts\, shawms and dulcian\, the loud consort\, or Alta Capella. The concert will also feature early German bagpipes. We associate bagpipes mostly with Scottish pipe bands\, but the instrument was a ubiquitous outdoor instrument throughout Europe in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Its origins are ancient – the Roman emperor Nero apparently played the bagpipes\, not the fiddle – and the instrument\, in all its localized forms\, is still a strong cultural tradition in all corners of Europe. This concert will be performed twice\, on Saturday and Sunday\, 1 and 2 August\, at 2:30 p.m. \nTo register for this performance\, please go to: www.ancientmusicvictoria.com/garden-noyse-2020 \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Summer Garden Concert 1: Les Délices de la Solitude
DESCRIPTION:This is our first “real concert” since the month of March! It will be set in the beautiful garden of Dr. Lloyd Howard and organized in accordance with provincial sanitary recommendations. \nThis concert will be on on Sunday\, 12 July at 2:30 p.m. The Society is grateful to Dr. Howard for the use of his garden on this occasion. \nThe concert will feature Martin Bonham\, baroque cello\, Katrina Russell\, bassoon and Andrew Clark\, natural horn. The programme is entitled Les Délices de la Solitude\, originally the name of a collection of sonatas for bassoon and basso continuo by Michel Corrette (1707-95). Two sonatas from this collection are included in the concert together with works by François Couperin\, Bach\, Handel and the seldom-heard Joseph Saggione (c. 1680-1733). \nDr. Howard’s garden will be divided for this occasion into twenty-one social-distancing “pods.” Each pod can accommodate up to three people from the same household. If you wish to attend\, please email hcazes@uvic.ca to reserve your spot and get directions. Please do not reserve a place unless you are certain you will attend since places are so limited and the musicians’ income depends on maximizing the size of the audience. Admission is by donation\, please be generous since all proceeds will go to the musicians. Donations\, all of which will benefit the artists in these difficult times\, can be made through Canada Helps:\nhttps://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/early-music-society-of-the-islands/events/garden-concert-series-first-concert-les-delices-de-la-solitude/ \n\nAn usher will meet you at the garden gate and direct you and the members of your household (three people in total) to a spot in the garden.\nDr. Howard’s garden is not wheelchair accessible but stairs can be avoided.\nThere will be no public washroom.\nThe use of masks is optional but strongly encouraged.\nPlease\, bring your own chair or blanket (none will be provided).\nFeel free to arrive at 2:00 and enjoy the beautiful grounds prior to the concert.
